There are many courses on the net. I largely work with Xilinx Spartan chips and VHDL (One of the programming languages) and used some of this for example...

I would think so. It helps if you have done any simple hardware using TTL level chips....

Its tricky. Some aspects are similar, but some are very different, so in effect, unless you do something to force what you would consider normal sequential behaviour, all statements run at one.
This means that things like this:-

 a = b;
 c = a;
