The "shoebox"!  I have one of these sitting on a shelf in the garage - 
haven't played with it in years.  I do not recall having any problems 
connecting to it from a terminal emulator.  Serial interfacing can be 
tricky, though.  Have you checked to ensure that TX --> RX in both 
directions?
