Is it a requirement to always specify the disk geometry in terms of
cylinders and sides?

I thought there was a way to specify that a disk was an LBA device or to
have the system query the device for its type and size.  Each of the
low-level drivers based on rbsuper (of which the CoCo SDC driver is one)
supports the GetStat request code SS.DSize for that purpose.
