I don't know that I'd agree completely there.  I think it was an idea 
ahead of its time.  Most new peripherals for contemporary PCs are like 
this, where the peripherals are smart.  As well, at the time, most 
people bought 1 drive, so the distinction was academic.

That said, given 20/20 hindsight, I agree the Apple II and Coco had the 
better approach, which was the create a "controller" one bought a single 
time, and then the drives were cheaper.
