You've hit dead on. The light gun was supposed to read the short duration
burst of light as the electron beam scans the face of the monitor, and
return the X/Y position of the target you were aiming at. A long
persistence monitor stayed lit for as much as .1 seconds, which totally
confused the guns like the diecom.

I just had that demo'd to me with my digital camera while attempting to
take a screen shot with it, the monitor was a vga of course, but as the
camera saw it, only about 1/3 the screen height was lit at any one time,
with the bright band scrolling slowly vertically. So, to get the info I
wanted, I had to wait and snap the digital shutter when only the top area
of the screen was lit according to the viewfinder. The camera took what I
saw. But I suspect that if the screen had been brighter, the camera would
have sped up the effective shutter and the band of light would have been
vertically narrower. That monitor is an escapee from an old weather set
at the tv station, and has a touch screen interface I considered writing a
driver for as its output is via the usual db9 for a seriel port. Baud rate
unk as it appears it is a completely separate from the monitor proper &
more than likely gets its power from that db9. It would be sort of cute
to use my finger instead of a mouse.

Its an "elo", does anyone have any data on one of those touch screen
interfaces?
