I am using DriveWire4 on Debian 7 and Ubuntu 12 without any issues. I
use 32-bit though.

Check which groups have access to it:
 ls -l /dev/ttyUSB0
Usually it belongs to a group called "plugdev".

Then check which groups your user belongs to:
 id
Usually a normal desktop user is member of "plugdev".
