Why is POP3 unsafe? In conjunction with STARTTLS you are as safe as IMAP
with STARTTLS is. ;) (besides basic failures, e.g. to allow plain
authentication schemes without encryption...)
The causes for POP3 disappearing are simply protocol and implementation
issues: POP3 doesn't support folders, header snooping, servers often have
problems to behave properly with multiple parallel sessions and so on.
