talking directly to a RS232 pal wouldn't be too hard.  I would have to
have to refactor the code to allow for vectoring the read and write
buffer routines.  Using the RS232 directly would eliminate the DW
layer.  I believe there is some DW handshaking that could be tested
for the presence of DW and modify the monitor accordingly.
