 Well, a real comedy of errors has ensued; a result of not working on

 stuff for several years! I've wasted more than a few hours over the
last few 
 days, but I won't bore people with the details.

 Today @lunchtime I got HDBDOS booting and reading from SD on the DE2.

 When I get home I'll test it on the DE1 and then upload for people to
try. 
 When that's done I'll post in this thread again.
