The extra inconvenience with interfacing another video chip, even if the 
outputs are genlocked into one for a single video output, is that it 
won't drive a modern LCD without an extra scan doubler circuit.

The CoCo3FPGA has this and a 4096 color palette (16 per screen or 16 per 
scanline with tricks). It also has a real 256 color mode and a vertical 
video res doubled to 450.
