[Coco] RS232 Pak needed

Aren't the 6551s being made any more? I see auctions for the chip on eBay...

Couldn't someone implement the functionality in an FPGA or something?

Actually the difficult part is the 6551a chip needed.
The +5 to rs232 levels after that is the easy part.
I've got a couple of max235's for some projects I've got in my head, they
don't need any caps, and have 5/5 input/outputs.

If you had one of the roger taylor coconet usb packs, they are a serial pak,
plus a serial to usb chip.
Remove the coconet rom, and you have a usb/serial pack.

Or to see an easy to read schematic, read the drive pak schematic.
Jp1 selects the rs232 pak or the modem pak address.
Instead of connecting a udrive to the 6551, wire up some max232's for a full
serial port.
Bonus, if you build your own, the rom is optional.

I'm surprised nobody has done a project using a Max232 chip. Should be
pretty easy to use one of those to create an inexpensive pak that could be
built as a kit.

Wish I knew EE. I'd do stuff like that to help people.

Also a new lowerkit, composite adapter for Coco and Coco 2, even a disk
controller like those two for the Dragon.

I'm trying to start a Coco BBS on a Coco3, but I need an RS-232 Pak to do it
with. Does anyone have one they would sell rather cheaply?

Thanks
