That won't work because there is no separate vdg in the coco3. It's all done by the gime. There is only one screen start address.

what about something unusual:

have the hud as split screen of a vdg hires 256x192x2 and the game as 320x200x16? the vdg will always have a different start address.

Yeah that would be a show stopper.  I assumed that you could change the vertical start offset whenever you wanted, but if it only gets read at the start of a frame then this wouldn't work.
