The gear doesn't wear out per sei, but the hub splits and it then slips on 
the shaft.  BTDT, put a new one on way back when when you could actually 
order parts from the shack, probably 20 years ago.  I put the new one on 
with superglue, and made note a couple years later that it also had split 
the hub, but that the superglue was still holding well.  I roughed up the 
shaft with 220 wet-r-dry to give it some tooth to grab when I put the new 
one in.

But then the pens became made of un-obtainium, and its quite hazy in the 
sands of time but I think I binned it as I haven't stumbled over it in my 
basement midden heap in at least 10 years.

That shaft IIRC is quite well polished, so you may be able to do a usable 
fix by taking a diamond tool to it, or a fresh piece of 150 to 220 grit 
wet-r-dry sandpaper and making some healthy, deep lengthwise scratches in 
the polish, then super gluing it.
