 The answer to both questions is yes.
 Both questions are the same, just worded differently.
 The side select was used to help select the drives.
 I did that once many years ago and it does work.
 There's no need for this anymore. That was a long time ago when single 
sided drives were the norm.

  I've never seen a 4 drive coco system.  Is it a single controller with 4
  drives on one ribbon?  Is it a straight through ribbon with 4 drive
  connectors?
