You need the same HDBDOS used with DriveWire 3.  DW3 and 4 use the
same ROMs and the same drivers in NitrOS9.
DW4 specific functionality is only available with the more recent
NitrOS9 drivers (last couple years) but all the basic stuff will work
with and driver that works with DW3.

Sound like one of:

wrong serial rate/coco model
bad cabling
bad serial adapter/driver

Don't put too much stock in the DW4 connectivity test... it mostly
verifies that you're plugged into the right port, little more.  It
does not test for proper operation of the cabling or serial port.
