[Coco] [off-topic] cabling problems

It's either an error in making the cables (you tested that though...) or 
the setup is wrong. I've got 200' of cat-5e underground shielded cable 
between my dad's house and mine -- we share an Internet connection that 
way. The cable is plugged into a little 5 port network hub on my end, a 
router on his end. I then ave another 100' cable going out to my shop. 
It runs from the 5 port network hub in my house to another 5 port hub in 
my shop. Multiple devices are plugged into each hub.

Sounds like you are using a long cable from a router directly to the 
second computer. There may not be enough signal strength for the 
ethernet port in the computer itself. Try connecting a small hub to the 
far end of the cable then connect the computer to that. The hub will 
amplify the signal. I bet that's the problem...
