For those wondering where the self-modifying code is:

Color Basic has a routine at $9F which reads the next character to be
interpreted. Within that routine, at $A6, is the address the character
is read from. That address also happens to be the operand of an LDA
extended instruction. The first 6 bytes at $9F increment the address in $A6.
