On reflection and after reading the aforementioned link, I believe it is 
most likely that the 6847 was created independent of the project and that 
the 6883 was created for the project (as mentioned in that link - to reduce 
chip count). Of course this is all just speculation on my part. I used to 
wonder why 32x16 was chosen as the video display format rather than 40x24, 
but also on reflection, at the time, many computers (SWTPC, etc.) were using 
some variation of Don Lancaster's TV Typewriter which was 32x16. It was 
apparently an easily implemented format at the time. I have many of Don's 
original articles in Popular Electronics, his three TV Typewriter books, 
etc. It's all interesting to read. We have come a very loooonnnggg way since 
those days.
