Yes, obviously OS9 has no idea what the name of the disk is :)  MESS
treats the disk differently somehow when it's named foo.os9.
Perhaps you need to make your emulator do the same thing that MESS
does upon seeing that extension, since it is behaving as MESS does
when MESS doesn't do whatever that thing is.
