In that case have you tried changing the extension to .os9, I seem to 
remember that MESS perhaps asumes that all .dsk images are SS35, which 
of course your images may not be. I believe if they have the .os9 
extension that MESS knows there's an os9 disk block there and checks for 
  the number of sides/tracks etc.
