Phill,

Make sure you switch to CoCo3 mode on the server side when moving to the CC3.

Accordingly move it back to CC1/CC2 mode when moving off the CC3.

The simplest way I can think of would be to physically loop-back the TX & RX 
pins on the connector at the coco end and run a serial terminal program on 
the coco. You should see any typed characters 'echoed' back.
