Here is a test case which strengthens my theory. Change the JMP $B4F3 in the PEEK code to an LBRA $B4F3 by entering the following pokes:

POKE &HB754,&H16
POKE &HB755,&HFD
POKE &HB756,&H9C

Now when you do a PEEK(&HFFA0), I'll bet it will return $38 instead of $78.
