That can be the case. Since most Cocos were manu factured prior torobotic 
pick and place, the ink printing did not necessarily have to be very legible. 
That change with robotic pick and place. Programs today can determine if 
the right part is being placed at the right spot on the PCB to some degree fo 
certaincy. For very small chip components this is not possible but definitely 
for ICs. 

The ink marking today has to be very readable with RED or IR lights. 
Actually using a red LED flashlight like one used in astronomy may help 
make the markings a bit more readable.
