For what it's worth, my thinking is that whatever you can do with a 
cassette deck, you can do better with 1/4" open reel.  I have a magazine 
from the very earily 80s and there's an article that compares double speed 
cassette using plain tape to standard speed using high end tape (metal, 
etc) and they found double speed to work better for them.  I don't see why 
you couldn't take that a step further and say that a tape which uses wider 
tracks and typically runs at 3.75 ips (double cassette speed) or faster 
almost has to be better.  I know the question wasn't asked of me so I'll 
leave it at that :)
