I don't know the history too well, but I think the 1400XL series were 
going to have the Amy (?) sound chip, but Trammel took over Atari and got 
rid of all the new computer projects at the time.  I honestly don't know 
if an upgraded 8-bit would have actually sold well, but it seems like the 
design could have used a few improvements over it's 10+ year live span.
