Yes, I have run into the shell memory problem also.
My solution, such as it is, is to then split up the delete into yhis format:

:del .h0/test/a*
:del /h0/test/b*
...
etc.
This is of course not proof against this problem.
I'm not sure there's any other (easy) way, though.
