A serial protocol analyzer is the right way to do that.

You can get cheap ones (~$50) off ebay, or you can use any PC with two
serial ports and appropriate software. I use 'sniffer' under Debian
Linux but there are options for Windows.

Gazing at packets "on the wire" is the only efficient way to debug
networking problems.
