you know what the IC functions are. 

Having time to inspect the actual board and/or get waveforms from a 
working unit is priceless. 

Reverse engineer and put the logic in an FPGA will not be 100% backward 
compatible but will be close. One thing is the 68 pin PLCC package. That  
has to go.
