I still think the easy, cheap, versatile thing would be to load Linux on one
of the Linksys wireless routers that  it runs on, and add the serial port
modification.

For software to connect the serial port to a telnet port, or tcp connection,
socat or netcat and maybe a shell script should work just fine.
