With a minor mod. The 179x series of controllers were capable of using either 8 or 5
1/4 disks. Take the clock signal to the 1793 from U1 pin #6 instead of pin#8 and the
controller should work with 8 inch drives. 8 in drives requires a 2 Mhz clock.
If you redo the clock circuitry and be able to switch between 2MHz, 1.2MHz and 1
MHz clocks the 1973 will handle all the 5 1/4 as well as the 3.5 in floppies. This
includes 1.4 and 1.2 Mbyte floppies.
A better approach would be to use the WD 2793 or WD 2797 chips. THen you have
the best of both RS controllers. A controller that is capable of various density and a
single 5 volt supply.
