What the hey -- the world's first computer programmer was a woman, actually  
a girl.  Ada Lovelace, daughter of poet Byron, as a child got a look at one  
of Charles Babbage's first machines, and intuitively understood how it  worked. 
 Later in life she helped him prepare some "prgrams" for his  Analyzer.
 
It was fun when I worked at Bell Labs, to see housewives who had just  joined 
the work force come in as contract workers.  Some with college  majors like 
History and German found they had a real knack for  programming!   One gal got 
deep in 360 Assembler and just ate up Hex  core dumps.
