Trouble is, ISTR that this approach would halt if it found any kind of I/O  
error.
I think the short program I mentioned would plow thru munged files where  
another file had been written over top of another's tail, etc.

Same here.  Some day I may thaw out my KIM-1 tapes (now there's a real  
challenge).
