Much of the early engine controllers were 68HC11s. If I remember 
correctly the 68HC11E series was Motorola's largest running of the 
HC11 series and a lot of them went to the automotive industry. 

In recent years though the conversion has been to HC12s. 
Motorola/Freescale makes a ton of them.
