A few days ago my old laptop, Toshiba 730CDT (on topic, really...) seems to
have had a
problem similar to yours, maybe not; here's what happened:

I hadn't used the computer in a few weeks; at the logon password, it
automatically filled in
the password with asterisks; hitting [enter] resulted in 'invalid password',
then asked for
password; keyboard entry didn't work properly; hitting [enter] again
resulted in shutdown.

Repeated attempts to boot gave similar results, even using the reset option.

The computer was stored in a room with no air conditioning - yep, I was
thinking 'thermal
sensitivity'... ambient temp was over 86F. Two days later, evening
outdoor temps dropped
from 94F to 68F and the room cooled to about 75F. When I tried the
computer the following
morning all boot problems had disappeared.

Perhaps if your coco is similarly thermally challenged...., then this story
could really be
called hot coco.... heh heh. Maybe worth a try at least.
