You might consider writing to one or more of the original authors to 
see what kind of agreements they were.

Might not help.
After 17 years, I don't remember jack diddly about my agreements with 
Compute!, RUN, UpTime, and Ahoy, except that Compute! pulled a bait-
and-switch nasty on me.
