Perhaps you only taped over the top side of the disk? Most if not all floppy
drives have the switch poking up from the bottom.

Hah! A local surplus shop "Discount Electronics" offers used 720K floppies for
$2 each... *used* ones for $2 each!!! Hmm... I bet this is the same guy selling
floppy drives for $100.
