Excuse me? We're talking 3.5 inch drives here. They CANNOT be "flipped" as
you say. If you put a 720K disk in a 1.44 MB drive, it just uses a different
data rate.
The second notch in the disk is to tell the drive that it is a 1.44MB
capable disk.
