Answering machine tapes also omit the leader, and are rugged and of  
reasonably short length.
But they are probably hard to come by nowadays, with most phone answerers  
being digital.
Radio Shack used to carry the special tapes.
 
But as others have said, any C-60 tape, forwarded past the leader, is  good.
 
If your tape player has a counter, you'll want to get int he habit of  
keeping a paper-and-pencil directory of each file's name versus the counter
