I have a spare DC Modem Pak that I hacked to use a 4-pin telephone
jack. This was used to allow the LK-201 smart keyboard to be used from
OS-9 and DOS projects. I remember breaking the DC Modem Pak PC board apart
and then adding the 1488 and 1489 chips to their own little boards which
are just floating in the case with the needed wires attached. It was a
weekend throw-together that worked. I might see if a 4-pin panel-mount DIN
jack will mount to the case instead of the RJ-11 jack which will make a
really nice alternate serial port.
