One thing I found out a while ago:  Most UPS boxes have a built-in surge 
protector for your modem phone line.  Some of these degrade the signal.  I used to 
always get stuck at 28 KBd or so, before changing to another UPS box, or 
bypassing the protection.

Anyway, you may have to trade off speed for safety against power glitches 
(lightning, etc.).  --Mike K.
