I thought there was a way to set it to automatically dump the trash when
more space is needed, but it has been a while.

Other places to look:

E-mail and news readers: They tend to keep copies of everything
that you send, and also have a separate trash folder to that
   needs to be dumped.

Web Browser caches, and temporary files. These can add up.

When you download a file, in many cases it is downloaded to a temporary
directory and then copied to it's destination.

If you use Internet Explorer, it sometimes makes it's cache files
invisible from some searches.

Look for temp and tmp directories.

Service packs and patches can be large, and their "backup" directories
can be large.

If you have personal web server turned on or a local web server, you may
have a small log file created by it every day.

Indexing software also may create work files, I do not remember if they
were piling up.
