I was thinking more along the lines of (small) amplifier tubes in the scan
and display systems. ISTR that some of this stuff was built in the '50s and
'60s

Actually, most radar systems use at least one tube (not including CRTs). The
most common being Magnetrons, Klystrons, and TWTs. Those are the tubes that
produce and amplify the microwave frequencies.
