The first edition K&R book is an excellent reference whether you know C 
already or not.  It goes through things in an order suitable for 
learning the language and yet is also easy to find things in when you 
use it as a general reference.  It wouldn't be a good book for someone 
who didn't know how to program a computer at all, but if someone knows 
how to program, but doesn't yet know C is is a wonderful way to go 
about learning.  I learned C from K&R1.
