By todays's standard yes slow. Even at 3 MHz buss speed the Coco can 
not go as fast a the slowest 8/16 bit transfer rate. 

All ATA -1 compliant drives and cards support 8 bit transfers. There is a 
register in the IDE controller to tell it that transfers will be 8 bit. ATA-2 
compliant were no longer required to support 8 bit transfers though some 
still did. Many of the older 40 to 100 MB drives of the late 80's to about 
1991/2 time frame would support 8/16 bit transfers. Also some CD drives 
of the 1x and 2 x speeds also supported 8 bit transfers. 

Once they got past the 524M barrier, I think no dirve supports 8 bit 
transfers. CDs past 4x no longer suport 8 bit transfers.
