Its not variable in the sense that it has a pot to set the voltage, 
Jim.  IIRC its a slide switch, giving (very approximately) 3, 4.5, 6, 
9, and 12 volts.  Its not even remotely close to regulated, but could 
be used to jury rig almost anything until the right supply can be 
obtained.  Only rated at 300 mills IIRC.  ISTR its about a 20 dollar 
bill, which seems a bit high.

It could be that smaller shacks might not stock it, and of course the 
sales drones "don't speak the language".  It should be on the right 
side of the center island at the rear of the store, in the first 
section in most stores.
