James, Essentially that is correct. You strobe the column 
port and then read the row port. The POLCAT routine has its 
own Scan routine to do just that. I am not sure of the 
location of the scan routine, and it may have been at 
different locations depending on which version of basic that 
you have.A call to that routine should do the job for you.
