"There is a peace that Christ bestows on us."

The world contains no counterpart of the peace given by Christ's vision.
Therefore there is really no way to describe it, not even by analogy,
because it has no counterpart, no equal, nothing like it in this world. All
we can do is experience it. "Comparisons are still before this peace."

This is why there is no universal theology, only universal experience. I can
experience this peace. All I need do is to ask. It may not come in conscious
awareness today, but simply asking brings it to me, whether or not I am
aware as yet. One day, when I know as I am known, I will be grateful for
every second in which I have remembered to seek this peace, for at that time
the gift, given even now, will still be mine.

I can experience this peace even now. I can go beyond receiving it unaware
to allowing it into awareness--deep and quiet, undisturbable and wholly
changeless--if I am willing to lay down every obstacle to it.

I have been aware, at times, that peace was being offered and that I was
refusing it. When someone has betrayed me or abandoned me, when life dealt
me a bitter blow such as the loss of a loved one, when the future seemed to
hold some terrible, immanent threat, peace was offered me. And I said, "Be
at peace when this is happening? No way!"

Or other times, when feeling lonely and longing for "that perfect
relationship," I have had the thought, "What if I could be perfectly at
peace right now--and never have this relationship I dream of, never
experience what I think I need to be happy? Would I do it? Would I accept
the gift of perfect peace?" And I have said no.

But there are times when I have allowed it in. And, oh, what a wonder it is!
Truly it cannot be described. When you receive this gift of peace you know,
instantly, that all the other things you thought you wanted, you didn't
really want, not if they meant not having this peace.

Sometimes we give up our peace just because someone didn't take out the
garbage. How unbelievably silly that is, isn't it?

"Help us today but to accept Your gift, and judge it not. For it has come to
save us from our judgment on ourselves."
