[Coco] What was used before EDTASM+?

I was using the tape version of EDTASM for the Model I back about 1979
and the cartridge version for the CoCo as soon as that came out.
Before that I did hand assembly. Those stacks of pages printed on a
Teletype for revision and commenting are long gone.
I never had a CoCo disk system.
