Yep, this is the same technique that Nick Marentes has been using to do things like his updated Donut Dilemma. Basically, you set the same resolution as a native SAM/VDG Coco mode (128x192x4, in most cases) but using the GIME graphics modes instead (which allows changing the border color with the border register, unlike the SAM/VDG ones). The screen pixels and colors of the pixels are set up the exact same way as the original SAM/VDG ones, so they are completely compatible.
