[Coco] Where as the data separator for CoCo floppies?

I see that the 2793 has a built-in data separator, so I'm concluding that
the data separator was in the controller, not in the drive.

Which makes me wonder, what exactly did a drive need in the way of
electronics?

I've forgotten, and I need to know for a novel I'm writing.
